Daily—Walk Humbly With Your God
February 3rd, 2019
The charge given in Deuteronomy 10:12-13, “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, 13 and to keep the commandments of the Lord and His statutes which I command you today for your good?” The best way to accomplish this is to take a daily walk with the Lord your God. Micah wrote, “He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Mic. 6:8). There was a man, in olden times whose name was Enoch. The scripture tells us that, “…Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him” (Gen. 5:24). Some preacher once said that, “Enoch must have walked so far from home with God that God just took him with Him.” Is there anything that could be recorded of your life, any greater carving on your grave-marker than, “He Walked Daily With His God”?
If daily we involve ourselves daily with God, mind, body and soul, by walking with God Him we will benefit in the most positive way possible, that is our lives will accord or harmonize with the Lord’s, that is, we’ll be on the same path, walking together. For this to happen there are a few basic fundamentals.
One such fundamental is…
Walking by Faith: There must be a resolute faith in God and in His Word. Without such we’ll never be able to please God let alone walk with Him spiritually. Every day we walk in faith with Him at our side through the revealed the Word, we grow closer to Him. But, without faith in His Word, it is simply impossible to claim we walk with Him. The scripture is clear on this, “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” (Heb. 11:6). During Paul’s journey to Rome he proved his faith by telling all who were on a sinking ship to totally set aside their human fears and reason and to, “take heart, men, for I believe God that it will be just as it was told me” (Acts 27:25). Walking with God means faith and letting go of our fears and holding fast to Him. Sadly, so many can’t actually walk with Him because of their lack of faith. Remember that the term “walk” refers to the way we live daily. We demonstrate little faith in God by the way we live if our walking is not up with our knowing.
Faith In His Mercy and Grace is a powerful motivator for each one of us: Every Christian must be committed totally to the very principle of the power of His saving grace for without this, we cannot truthfully walk upright with our Lord. His grace saves us and strengthens us such that, just as a newborn baby cannot walk on its own physical power, neither can we walk spiritually on our own power—we all need Jesus. We cannot provide the means of our salvation, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Rom. 3:23-24). We let God save us by the power of His grace and understand that it is His mercy, not our “works of righteousness”. that can merit for us a “right-standing” with our God. Nothing we’ve done, “but according to His mercy He saved us” (Tit. 3:5). God is, “rich in mercy, because of his great love with which he loved us,” He saved us and “made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus” because of the, “exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus” (Eph. 2:4-7). His amazing grace saved a wretch like me; Praise Him! Don’t allow yourself to struggle with the weight of the daily sins. It can all be lifted if you just humble yourself and walk with God daily. Have faith in His saving grace!
This is so important—can you see? It is only “by faith” that we can have access “into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God” (Rom. 5:2). Knowledge of that saving grace is powerful motivation to daily walk with Him. Walking in the light, that is walking in accord with God’s word, brings us into fellowship with one another, and connects us to the cleansing blood of Jesus (1 John 1:7). Even the most mature of our brethren must daily humble themselves and walk with God, for the devil never stops seeking us, never lets us go in peace, and we know the “spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak”, and “these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish” (Matt. 26:41; Gal. 5:17). There is too must against us for us to make it on our own, we must daily walk with Him and allow His grace and mercy, the power of His blood, and the power of His word to keep us on the right way.
As for His blood when our faith leads us to repent and to be baptized, immersed into the watery grave, our sins are washed away by His blood (Acts 22:16; Rom. 6:3-6; 1 John 1:7). As we humble ourselves, and daily continue to walk in the light with Him, He’ll encourage us to confess our sins, to change course. When we meet those conditions, that blood will be again applied and cleanses us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).
Walking with Him daily is like having a friend who catches you when you stumble. God’s own Son Jesus is that friend who can daily correct us from our faltering and stumbling ways. We must just reach up and grasp His guiding hand allowing our every step to be under His control. Like the Psalmist says, “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; For the Lord upholds him with His hand” (Psa. 37:23-24). Solomon wrote, “A man’s steps are of the Lord; How then can a man understand his own way?” (Prov. 20:24). Answer: He can’t. But for certain, when we daily walk with Him, “all fear is gone”, and our daily lives will be joyous. Just as certain, if we live day to day without Him at our side, instead—of—knowing—He—is—with—us, as we “walk through the valley of the shadow of death” (Psa. 23:4), we will certainly have doubts, which will turn our joy to misery.
Paul then said, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them” (Eph. 2:10). We are “His” workmanship! He created us, and we are “created in” Christ Jesus for good works which have been “prepared” by God—not by man’s invention. We must allow God’s perfect word to direct us in all our ways. Avoiding a daily walk with Him will loosen His word’s connection to our spirit. That’s when unnecessary difficulties begin. Prayer is also coupled with our daily walk, for we can walk in them daily thus we involve ourselves with God, mind, body and soul by our love for Him and our daily walks in the word of the Lord.
Are you walking with God? Are you enjoying your daily walk with him? I hope you are. The more you walk with Him the less you’ll praise yourself and the more you’ll praise Him. If you’ve not been walking daily, why not take His hand. If you’ve never yet walked with Him why not begin that happy walk with your God right now? What a joy it is to know that you are holding on to his unchanging hand!
In Love
