Your Throne Shall be Established Forever
May 24, 2020
Such passages as, “I have made a covenant with My chosen, I have sworn to My servant David: 4 ‘Your seed I will establish forever, and build up your throne to all generations’” (Psa.89:3-4), we understand to be a promise from God to David, that the Messiah would sit upon “David’s” throne. I can’t even begin to count the number of “Premillennialists” I’ve met who try to apply this prophecy to a “millennial kingdom”. We serve the Lord and King Jesus, they deny that. Jesus is now sitting on David’s throne, they deny that. Jesus is King ruling from His throne in Heaven, they deny that too. We have been studying about Jesus, that He, is God, came down from Heaven, walked among men, is the Prophesied Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:1, 14, 29). We add to this, that Jesus is divine proved by His signs, water into wine (John 2), Nobleman’s Son Healed (John 4), A Man Healed at the Pool of Bethesda (John 5), Feeding of the 5,000, and He went walking on the water (John 6).
Why I am recounting these things? What difference does it make? Because if they believe all these things are true, if they believe these, then why can’t they accept the proof right from the Scriptures that Christ is now sitting on David’s throne? The answer is because if they did, their doctrine of premillennialism would be wrong, for it denies such. Because if Christ is now sitting on David’s throne, their interpretation of Bible prophecy is wrong, and Jesus will not establish a millennial kingdom on earth.
In this article I’d like to answer just a couple of questions that I believe will arm us with truth to offer to those who have been duped by the zealous premillennialist. First let’s answer the important question, is David’s throne a physical, literal throne? The short answer, No! To expound on this God didn’t promise David that the physical chair he sat on would be used forever. There isn’t a cave that has David’s throne hidden and reserved somewhere. No building from the first century with a secret room where only Jesus knows the combination. No, for David’s throne, represented his position of authority, and Jesus, being the seed of David does have all authority over all things which of course included the church. Jesus said, “God is Spirit…” (John 4:24), Paul wrote, “Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God…” (1 Cor. 15:50). Revelation 3:21, John records Jesus saying, “To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne”. Ok, connect the dots. God is Spirit, nothing physical in Heaven, so, is God’s throne made out of wood, gold or silver? No! The symbolic language that describes the One on His throne simply represents God’s, Christ’s sovereignty, power and deity. Jesus is the Head, King, and Ruler over the kingdom, the church and is to be worshipped as such “And [a]as they went to tell His disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, “Rejoice!” So they came and held Him by the feet and worshiped Him” (Matt. 28:9; Rev. 1:7). No angel or man can rightly accept worship (Rev. 19:10; Acts 10:25-26). Paul wrote, “20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all principality[a] and [b]power and [c]might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. 22 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.” (Eph. 1:29:23). David’s throne was God’s throne, because God gave it to him. “Then Solomon sat on the throne of the Lord as king instead of David his father…” (1 Chron. 29:23). Again, whose throne was David and Solomon sitting on?
Secondly, the kingdom isn’t coming, it is already established and all who obey the gospel of Jesus Christ are already subjects of His kingdom here, on the earth. Let us connect some more dots. Paul wrote concerning this, “He has delivered us from the power of darkness and [a]conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love” (Col. 1:13). Who is “He”? God. Who is “us”? The letter was written to the church. I don’t know about you, but I have a King, and I am a subject of His, in His kingdom, and I’m not waiting for my King to setup what is already done. When will we, the church be in Heaven with the Father and the Son? “Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power”, then “To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne…” (1 Cor. 15:24; Rev. 3:21). So, even though David did have a physical throne on earth, it was Jehovah’s to rule over His people. Christ sitting on David’s throne is sitting on the throne of the Father ruling over His people. God made the promise to David in 2 Samuel 7:12-16 that he would sit one upon his throne, and Christ is the one God raised up to sit on David’s throne (Acts 2:25-36). “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.” (v.36). Jesus was resurrected to sit in a position of authority in the kingdom, the church, and I call Him Lord now because He is.
Christ was to reign on David’s throne after David’s physical body died. “When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom” (2 Sam. 7:12). Jesus was raised from the grave to sit on David’s throne and, where was David? David was dead and in his tomb. Peter said, “Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, [a]according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne” (Acts 2:29-30).
One last point. The premillennialists have Jesus seated on David’s throne after the resurrection of the righteous. Again, let’s connect the dots. “THAT’S TOO LATE!” What does the scripture say? “16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord” (1 Thess. 4:16-17). You search for yourself. When Jesus comes, there is not one scripture that indicates He will ever step His foot on this earth, only that the faithful will be raised up in the clouds together with Him forever. If you’ve been taught anything different, then you need to connect some dots. Paul calls it, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Tim. 2:16, KJV). Our Bible, every Bible plainly teaches that Jesus Christ is now, not will be, but is now “…is the blessed and only [a]Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen.” Any the doctrine by any name that says Christ is not now reigning on David’s throne is false and unfounded.
